 Season with Salt
By Deborah

What is salt? According to Wikipedia, “Salt is a dietary mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride that is essential for animal life, but can be toxic to many land plants. Salt flavor is one of the basic tastes, making salt one of the oldest, most ubiquitous food seasonings. Salting is an important method of food preservation. Chloride and sodium ions, the two major components of salt, are necessary for the survival of all known living creatures. Salt is involved in regulating the water content (fluid balance) of the body. Overconsumption of salt increases the risk of health problems, including high blood pressure.”

The word salt is found in different scriptures. Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt when she looked back on Sodom & Gomorrah. Grain offerings to Father were salted. Too much salt would spoil land for farming or living on. It is also used to describe the covenant Yahweh made with us.

Numbers 18:19

"I give to you and to your sons and daughters all the holy contributions that the Israelites present to the LORD as a perpetual statute. It is a perpetual covenant of salt before the LORD for you as well as your offspring."

And was used to show healing, purification and preservation.

2 Kings 2:21

Elisha went out to the spring of water, threw salt in it, and said, "This is what the LORD says: 'I have healed this water. No longer will death or unfruitfulness result from it.' "

When you read the following, what do you think it means?

Colossians 4:5-6
5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the time. 6 Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person

Does it mean that the words used should be pleasing and palatable to the person you are speaking with? Or perhaps the following scripture might aid you in understanding the deeper meaning.

Matthew 5:13
Believers Are Salt and Light
13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It's no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.

If salt is a covenant or pure mineral that has been tampered with, contaminated, altered, it is no longer good for use. But the covenant that was made when Christ died on the cross for us is a NEW covenant replacing the old covenant.

Hebrews 8:6-8

6 But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree He is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been legally enacted on better promises.

A Superior Covenant
7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, no opportunity would have been sought for a second one. 8 But finding fault with His people, He says:
"Look, the days are coming," says the Lord,
"when I will make a new covenant
    with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah--

So when we read Colossians 4:6 6 Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person., we see that is is the truth of the new covenant with its healing, purifying and preserving qualities that we are to speak of.

1 Peter 3:15
15 but set apart the Messiah as Lord in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you

Hold onto that truth and hope and share it with those that will listen. It will be a lifeline in the coming days.
